The secret to preventing patient gagging is a solution called DYC rinse (formerly Cyclone DS rinse), which is a 1.0 percent dyclonine preparation available from Steven's Pharmacy. Ask the patient to swish with a mouthful of DYC rinse for 45 to 60 seconds, and all the soft tissue it touches is anesthetized. I tell patients they will not gag if they use the DYC rinse and so far I have been 100 percent correct. On the hygiene side, my hygienist uses DYC rinse for periodontal probing for patients with inflammation and gross debridement patients who are sensitive. We see a lot of patients who are overdue for hygiene but do not need scaling and root planing. Since we typically only use local anesthetic for root planing patients, DYC rinse helps fill the gap as an easy-to-use topical anesthetic that provides peace of mind to the patient.

Like many dentists, I didn't pay much attention to sports mouthguards until my son, Chandler, needed one for ice
hockey. Most of the team parents assumed a boil-and-bite mouthguard was the only choice, but because of my years at Glidewell, I knew better.
The custom-made PlaySafe mouthguard fits better, offers more protection, and most importantly to my son, it looks really cool! Mouthguards lower the risk of broken teeth and the severity of trauma to facial bones and tissues. In addition, they may help absorb blows to the chin and jaw that could potentially result in a concussion. Let your patients know you provide this wonderful service!

It is a mystery to me why more dentists have yet to adopt digital shade taking technology. Of course, it's also a
mystery to me why more dentists haven't incorporated digital radiography into their practices, but at least with digital X-rays they can claim the high initial cost to purchase a system is keeping them out. That's simply not the case with the VITA Easyshade Compact.
The VITA Easyshade Compact is portable, and it can easily be carried from operatory to operatory or into hygiene rooms to measure bleaching success. When someone told me I would never have to take a shade or miss a shade again, I jumped at the opportunity to invest in this technology, and I haven't been disappointed. Stop guessing about shades and get the VITA Easyshade Compact—you won't regret it.

Why should you be interested in this monolithic concept of a solid zirconia crown? One of the big reasons is, when you fuse porcelain to a metal or zirconia substructure there is always the possibility that the two layers will come apart. The best-case scenario is a small chip on the porcelain that you might be able to polish off. The worst-case scenario is the porcelain completely fracturing, exposing the substructure and requiring replacement. So, a key benefit of monolithic restorations is that nothing can chip off of it since we don't have two materials that are fused together. It's all made out of one homogeneous material—in the case of BruxZir, tough zirconia oxide. The next time you want cast gold and the patient does not, give BruxZir a try!
