Choosing Between Screw-Retained and Cement-Retained Implant Crowns
Take a Test | View PDF | Online Magazine

Course Objectives (2 CE Credits)

There are advantages and disadvantages to using a screw-retained versus a cement-retained implant crown. It is important for the clinician to be aware of the pros and cons of each type of restoration when deciding which prosthetic design is most appropriate for a particular case. After reading this article, the clinician should understand the many important elements involved in choosing which crown to use, including:

  • Retrievability
  • Retention and resistance
  • Stress to bone and implant
  • Esthetics
  • Complications
  • Cost
  • Accessibility
  • Occlusal principles

Summary

When treating implant patients, choosing between a cement-retained and a screw-retained crown is a complex and comprehensive decision. Many components go into selecting which crown is best suited to a particular restorative situation. A thorough case-by-case analysis is necessary to determine the most appropriate prosthetic design.
