IntroductionWith rapid advances in fixed prosthodontic esthetic materials and techniques, it's no surprise that patients who require removable prostheses also expect esthetic results. Partially or fully edentulous patients comprise nearly half of the aging population, and this group is projected to triple thanks to an ever-aging population. One thing is certain: Removable prosthodontics will continue to be a part of the general dentist's restorative practice for decades to come.Figure #1A basic metal partial denture utilizes many different types of clasps, such as the akers clasp (shown). -
Figure #2The Valplast clasp is fairly translucent, which allows the unique color of underlying tissue to show. -
Figure #3Patient presented with a desire to replace her old RPD with Valplast to eliminate the metal I-bars. -
Figure #4The new Valplast RPD blends more naturally with the surrounding gum tissues and remaining dentition. -
Figure #5Thermoflex™ (DENTSPLY Austenal) is another option for esthetic partial clasps that can be used in place of metal clasps. -
Figure #6Valplast can be used in combination with Vitallium® (DENTSPLY Austenal) to provide better support and clasp esthetics. -
Figure #7The all-Valplast partial is tissue borne and flexible, which provides maximum comfort for the patient. -
Figure #8The Thermoflex clasp is designed and shaded to match the color of the abutment tooth. -
Figure #9The combination Vitallium and Valplast clasp is shown intraorally. It blends well with the surrounding dentition. -
Figure #10The all-Valplast partial seems to disappear with the surrounding dentition, offering exceptional esthetics. -
Figure #11The benefits of using a combination of Vitallium and Valplast include the small lingual bar and extra occlusal support. -
Figure #12From an occlusal view, the all-Valplast partial appears to be esthetic and smooth for the patient's tongue. -
Figure #13A fully retracted facial view of the lower Valplast partial in place shows how well the clasps blend with the gingival tissue. -
Figure #14The Accu-Dent® Alginate system uses specially designed trays that come in several sizes for accurate tray dimensions. -
Figure #15Light body alginate is placed over the dentition with a special syringe for replication of the fine details. -
Figure #16The heavy body material is placed into the tray, held under water to smooth the surface, and then seated over the teeth. -
Figure #17The alginate system provides a quick and accurate impression of partially edentulous cases for the lab. -
Figure #18Proper powder-to-water ratios must be used to provide the lab with an accurate cast for a well-fitting partial.
