Guided Surgery Precautions

Check the health status of the patient. Any medical problems or medications that could affect wound healing may also contraindicate dental implant surgery. All general precautions for oral surgery should be observed. In severely atrophic cases, or cases with large defects, there may not be adequate bone to place dental implants. In these cases, grafting procedures may need to be performed prior to dental implant placement. Check the soft tissue status where you are planning to place the dental implant, particularly if you are considering a flapless approach. After placement, the implant should be surrounded by at least 2-3 mm of keratinized tissue. Because guided surgery drills are longer than standard drills, the patient must have adequate vertical opening, particularly if you want to place posterior dental implants. A rough rule of thumb is that you need at least 40 mm of anterior opening. A quick way to check at the initial appointment is to place a guided surgery drill into your handpiece and try it in the patient's mouth.
- NobelGuide™ Straight Guided Drills are 10 mm longer than the standard drills
- NobelGuide™ Tapered Guided Drills are 6 mm longer than the standard drills
- The SimPlant™ drill length = the implant length + the guide sleeve (5 mm) + the prolongation length (space between the top of the implant and the bottom of the sleeve)
