Course Objectives

In this course, Dr. Mark Abramson provides an overview of dental sleep medicine and how it can be used to treat sleep-disordered breathing, which is widespread and associated with serious health consequences. Starting with an evolutionary perspective, the unique anatomy of the human jaw and throat will be examined in order to understand their vulnerability to breathing obstruction during sleep. Participants will gain knowledge of their role in screening and management of patients from diagnosis to treatment, including oral appliance therapies.

Dr. Mark Abramson is a Northern California-based clinician who specializes in the treatment of sleep-related breathing disorders. He developed the FDA-approved O2 OASYS Oral/Nasal Airway System™ for the treatment of snoring and sleep apnea, and he is the president of Dream Systems LLC. Dr. Abramson is an adjunct professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he teaches courses on mindfulness-based stress reduction. He is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain and American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain.
