Screw-Retained Crown vs. Custom Abutment
The screw-retained crown (left) and cementable crown over custom abutment are CAD/CAM restorative options that help produce a predictable outcome by establishing precise gingival margins and alignment with the soft-tissue anatomy. When indicated, screw-retained crowns offer ease of delivery and avoid problems related to cement around implants.

Custom Abutment vs. Stock Abutment
The tissue-level junction established by a custom abutment allows for easier cement removal than a stock abutment with shallow margins.

Clinical Studies

BEFORE: A gold-tone titanium custom abutment was delivered at a healed implant site, achieving a precise fit while simplifying crown delivery.

AFTER: The final BruxZir Full-Strength crown was cemented over the custom abutment without the need for any adjustments, and established optimal gingival margins.
– Clinical dentistry by Jack A. Hahn, DDS

BEFORE: Four months after implant placement, a custom abutment was delivered with ease and aligned perfectly with the soft-tissue anatomy of the implant site.

AFTER: The final Obsidian All-Ceramic restoration blended well with the surrounding teeth. Note the natural emergence profile resulting from the use of the custom abutment.
– Clinical dentistry by Paresh B. Patel, DDS

BEFORE: An implant was placed to restore an upper central incisor. After implant integration, a zirconia custom abutment with titanium base was seated.

AFTER: A final BruxZir Zirconia crown was delivered over the zirconia custom abutment with titanium base, resulting in a precise fit and optimal esthetics in the smile zone.

“At the final restoration appointment, the custom abutments and implant crowns from Glidewell are seated with ease and typically establish the desired form, function and esthetics without the need for any chairside modifications.”
Implant crowns are prosthetic components that are cemented to an abutment connected to endosseous dental implants and are intended for use as an aid in prosthetic rehabilitation of missing teeth.

Clinical Tips
At the discretion of the clinician, utilize a temporary or permanent cement of choice and take care in removing all excess cement from around the margins of the abutment and implant crown.
- Remove the healing abutment from each implant and immediately replace it with an open- or closed-tray impression coping. NOTE: It’s important to seat the impression coping quickly to avoid soft-tissue collapse.
- Connect the impression coping to the implant and take a radiograph to verify that the impression coping is seated correctly.
- Inject light-body syringe material around each impression coping. Fill the tray with medium or heavy body and record the impression.
- Submit the impression to the laboratory.
For detailed instructions for open- and closed-tray impressions, see our Impression-Taking Techniques guide.
